Vintage Two-Tone Torsade Shell Necklace — Alternating Brown Mitra & White Marginella, 35", Early 1980s
Brown and white. Shell and shell. One single strand that becomes three — and back again.
This vintage 35-inch necklace is strung in a precise alternating pattern — one brown patterned Mitra or Olive shell, one smooth creamy white Marginella shell, tip-to-tip, all the way around. The contrast is graphic and intentional: the brown shells carry bold flame and tiger patterning in warm brown and cream, while the white shells are smooth and clean, giving the eye a place to rest between each patterned shell.
What makes this piece exceptional is its torsade construction: the single strand splits into three separate strands at the center, fans out in a lush, layered bib effect, then merges back to a single strand. This is not simple stringing — it takes skill and planning to execute in shell, and the result is a necklace that transforms as it moves.
Hand-strung, no clasp, continuous loop. Travel-acquired in the early 1980s from Pacific Island or coastal craft markets where this caliber of shell work was being made.

WEAR IT
The torsade center fans out beautifully at the chest, creating a layered bib effect that a single-strand necklace simply cannot achieve. The two-tone alternating pattern works with almost anything — the brown picks up warm earth tones, the white keeps it fresh and clean. At 35 inches with a three-strand center, this has serious presence.
